1. Read the definition of point of view on page 580. What is the point of view used in the beginning of the story? What effect was created by this point of view?
2. Literary Analysis- page 581. first paragraph--What impact does this scene have on readers and why might the author have chosen to open this way?
3. Synthesizing--Why is Farquhar being hanged. Look for clues in the text and piece them together for an explanation.
4. Clarifying- Explain the significance of the paragraph marked B on page 584.
5. Foreshadowing- On page 588, the following lines, "A strange, roseate light shone through the spaces among their trunks and the wind made in their branches the music of Aeolian harps." What might this represent or implies might happen in the story?
6. Imagery- Page 588 letter C. How does the author paint a vivid picture of Farquhar as he nears his home?
